In the Chile Mine Resuce, how did they know the miners were stuck there and had survived?

Nancy D knows what she's talking about, they had a small hole for communication & ping small amounts of food, at first they thought the miners were dead & were surprised when the sent a camera through the hole & saw them still alive.
